Malta state schools prepare for 37,771 students in 2026/27

Malta’s state schools are preparing to receive 37,771 students from kindergarten through secondary level in the 2026/27 school year, according to an Education Ministry announcement published on Friday, 25 September.

The ministry said the total includes 2,754 new students and that 8,861 educators will work across the state-school system.

Free school transport registrations have reached 36,457 students so far. Of these, 15,370 attend state schools and 21,087 attend Church or independent schools. The service covers 207 schools and is available to eligible students from the first kindergarten year through Year 11 who live more than one kilometre from their school.

The Foundation for Tomorrow’s Schools has projects worth more than €110 million under way. The ministry’s list includes the opening of Kerċem Primary School in Gozo during this school year, planned works at Żebbuġ Primary School in Gozo, a new Naxxar primary school expected to open next year, a new Mellieħa primary school, and an extensive refurbishment of St George Primary School in Qormi.

The ministry also reported that 142 regular teachers and 45 supply teachers were recruited for the new year, a total of 187.

During the summer, around €2 million was spent on 160 maintenance projects involving classrooms, roofs, recreation areas and furniture. Valletta Primary School is due to reopen following a separate €2.2 million renovation that included air conditioning, photovoltaic panels, accessible bathrooms, autism-sensitive adaptations, upgraded safety systems and new sports facilities.
